Vehicle imports to Nigeria are allowed for vehicles manufactured in the last 12 years, but with significant restrictions and high taxes. Commercial vehicles, tractors, and specialized equipment for mining and construction are often exempt from the age restriction, but all other vehicles are subject to a 12-year age limit from the date of manufacture. 

Key import regulations for vehicles Age restriction: Vehicles must be no more than 12 years old from the date of manufacture. 

• 🟢 Drive-hand restriction: Only left-hand drive vehicles are permitted. 
• 🟢 Taxes and duties: Importing vehicles is subject to various taxes, including a customs duty (which varies by vehicle type).
• 🟢 Commercial vehicles:  A separate set of rules applies to commercial vehicles, tractors, and earth-moving equipment, which are often exempt from the age restriction. 
• 🟢 Local production:  There are incentives for foreign automakers to partner with local assemblers and set up assembly plants.

Examples of Taxable Percentages on Imported vehicles:

• 🟢 20% for Cars,
• 🟢 5% for Commercial Buses, and
• 🟢 10% for Trucks
• Plus other charges like:
• 🟢 Custom levy (4% on Value cost)
• 🟢 NAC (2% on Cost,insurance and freight)
• 🟢 ETLS (0.5% on Cost,Insurance and Freight)
• 🟢 IAL - for Cars (20% LEVY on Cost,Insurance and Freight)
• 🟢 4% on CIF for Green Tax - 4.000 Cubic Capacity (CC) & Above Engine
• 🟢 2% on CIF for Green Tax - Below 3.999 Cubic Capacity (CC) Engine
• 🟢 VAT(7.5% Cost, Insurance and Freight in additions of all of the above payable taxes)
